EDUC 2120-Lesson 3:
Class and SES
Overview Viewpoint:
Lesson three of EDUC 2120 focuses on socioeconomic status. Socioeconomic status (SES) is an economic and sociological combined total measure of a person's work experience and of an individual's or family's economic and social position in relation to others, based on income, education, and occupation. For this lesson we had to read two handouts, a article, and watch a video. This was a two part lesson with the first lesson being about socioeconomics and the second part focusing on a handout called "He's so weird" which focusese on a child who recounts an incident where is clique isolated a classmate becuase they didnt fit in.
Part A
-
How is SES measured? Explain.
SES is measured by 5 different groups (factors). They are Income, occupation, education, neighborhood, and political power.
-
Describe at least 2 negative effects of low SES.
Negative effects of low SES can cause problems with a child's cognitive development. Its more common for fetal alcohol poisoning and babies being premmies from families that are low SES. Some of these cases an lead to languege delays and learning disabilities. It is said that parents of low SES just encorage them to conform to society's expections meaning sometimes they are less creativive and only stick to what they know. Its is also said that young adults in low SOS experience more low self-esteem and and high delinquency rates.
-
Describe some of the differences concerning education and student achievement levels in Low SES families versus High SES families.
Compared to High SES, lower SES has slower rates or academic progress. Children from low SES experience more delayed languege skills and letter recognition. Low SES children are high risk for reading difficulties compared to high SES students. Drop out rates also tend to be high from lower SES students also. Children with higher SES were more likely to be good at math and word problems. Compared to higher SES neighborhoods, low SES neighborhoods usually have less educational resources. They tend to have little preparation, also having less focus in school.
-
Describe some options that are available for Low SES families concerning education.
The home environment contributes a lot with academic skills for low SES families. This includes verbal skills, reading, and math. These skills are usually resolved for low SES families with the help of the school. These schools help recognize ways to improve the home learning environment. There are also programs like Head Start which gives families a chance to better prepare their children.
-
Explain how socioeconomic status determines the economic conditions of persons.
Low SES families focus on meeting immediate needs and do not accumulate wealth compared to higher SES families. These problems can be passed on to future generations increasing inequality. Some of these low SES families also cannot afford health insurance, causing them to not be able to get help or have high troubles of paying off their bills.
Can a person change their SES? If so, describe how. If not, describe why not.
Yes. Low SES families do have a chance to change their SES statuses. A lot of times they do it by getting good jobs or moving to a higher SES neighborhood. Children also have good chances from going to school and taking advantage of the programs, help, and opportunities that are given to them. There are also times that families from High SES status can change to low SES. Sometimes this happens through the loss of jobs.
-
Concerning the YouTube video, describe what you learned
I learned from the video of the inequalities between those who face it and those who don't. It shows the inequalitity between classes. I learned that their is less people with less then any other class. Mostly because those under the upper class arent giving the opportunites.

Summary
Living in poverty, living in middle class, and being rich plays a major role in many ways. It's tells how a child might turn out and if they will have a good chance of being successful or not. Those who come from low SES tend to have a lot of issues in life and struggles. A lot of times they dont even get the correct education that they need. Its bad that sometimes a children has to struggle because of the generation ahead of them and it passes down. Those with high SES are usually able to afford a lot more thing without struggle. They also at times get better educations and dont have as many educational problems compared to low SES children.

Research Question?
What can parent's do so that their children don't become apart of Low SES or Economic Hardahip?
-
Research Anaysis
Low income on young children is troubling because it can can cause difficulties later in life. Like dropping out of school and the lack of an enriching environment. Enriching environments help create a sturdy environment for school achievement and responsible citizenship. Levels of parental education are a primary risk factor for being low income. Eighty-three percent of children whose parents have less than a high school diploma live in low-income families, and over half of children whose parents have only a high school degree are low income as well. Family income can impede children's cognitive development and their ability to learn. It can contribute to behavioral, social, and emotional problems.
Parent's have to do the best they can for their child's future. A childs earliest years have a profound effect on their life. A way school systems can work together is to connect parents with services like financial coaching. Parents have to encorage their children and have to stay positive.
There are tons of kids that have been affected by living in poverty and being in the low SES. Most times it is because it is past done from generation to generation. Parents play a big role in their childs life which is why it is important for them to set them up to succeed. Yes, it is possible for a child to succeed without their parents but the chances arent so high.

Part B
-
The author uses a strong metaphor, describing high school students as "wild beasts roaming the plains," hunting each other. How would you describe your high school experience?
A crazy jungle with wild creatures. My high school wasnt the best. In fact state took over my high school. I called eveyone creatures because everyone was different shapes and sizes and they acted like bugs.....aggravating. I also called it a jungle becuase it felt like something different from a school, the high schooler who went they didnt listen to the teachers and most times argues with them. My school didnt have much of a learning environment and many of the teachers gave up on most students.
-
The author says she has "been a victim of harsh words and stinging insults." Why do you think she would help inflict the same kind of harm on another person? Why would the author feel worse as the "hunter" instead of the "hunted"?
I think because to her the hunter feels no pain when they are doing the hunting or in her case "bullying."
-
Name the superficial reasons that caused the clique to socially isolate Ethan. Are the reasons fair? Is there something Ethan could have done differently?
They felt like he didnt fit in. They didnt like his looks and thought he was weird. No, they are not fair. No there is nothing Ethan could of done differently except choose better friends.
-
Have you ever witnessed a classmate or peer publicly rejected? How did the person react? How did you react?
I have. Usually i see people pick on the ones who dont say much. But, i never seen them react except for move away from the person who was bullying them. Most times i would tell the person to stop and then i would talk to the person they were bullying. Sometimes just having a normal conversation with them changes there perspective and shows not everyone is like the bully.
-
Why do you think the "Huggy Bears" felt sad after the prank? Why didn't they discuss what happened?
Ethan was once their friend. They saw how much it hurt them and they felt bad. They didnt want to discuss what happened because they were embarresed and wanted it to go away.
-
Do you think the incident led to Ethan's difficulties with social anxiety and depression?
I think so because he actually trusted them. Now he finds in troubling to trust and has social anxiety because hes scared to trust again.
-
When someone is hurt as badly as Ethan, is it important to apologize or to try to make amends? What makes an apology meaningful?
I think it is important if you actually mean it. An apologize can actually save someones life. I think a meaningful apology is when you mean it from the heart.
