The project focuses what we would do in our classes. For this project we had to go on the Georgia Performance Standards website and look at the standard list and select an area of study that we would like to teach. We had to choose one GPS and incorporate our own lesson into it. We were able to you the internet and look for guideness with the project. This project was an eye opener for something we must prepare for because we will be doing this all the time. So this project was something good to prepare us.

  • What did he find during his voyages?

  1. Materials:

  • Ruler

  • Colored Pencils/Crayons

  • Map of Christopher Columbus voyage

  • Scissors

  • Tape

  1. Procedures:

  • Introduction:

Students were passed out handouts on Christopher Columbus accomplishments. Today the students will get a better visual on the directions that Columbus travels and what happened at each location. I will begin the class by asking the students questions from the handouts. I will begin with questions for his early life moving till his death. Then we will focus in depth of what he learned and how he did it.

  • Demonstration:

I will display a picture of the world map. I will point out with a laser where Columbus was born and talk about the different places that he visited. While talking about his destinations i will tell some more history about the locations and the people there. The students will learn some of the names the people where given from Columbus. They will also be taught during the voyage which locations he went on during each one. I will also read the Christopher Columbus handout with the students after given them 10minute to read it to themselves.

  • Guided Practice

The students will engage in a creative activity which will allow them to physically display Columbus's voyage. For this game they will have to group up in teams of 4. They will be given large pieces of paper so they can sketch out a world map. The next thing I will give them strips of paper that has what he did in each location and hints about the people. They will then have to tape it to the location after deciding as a team where they think it belongs. Following that they will use there colored pencils or crayonsto draw out each location and each way he went on each location. Using different crayons for each voyage. We will then have one student from each group come to the front and tell  about one location.

  • Independent Practices

Each student will be given a piece of paper. This paper will  have them match the options given on the left side of the paper to the right side of the paper. The following words given will focus on:

  • What places he visited

  • The names of his ship

  • His finding

  • Summary

I will end this lesson by having them watch a movie provided from Youtube.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6n-LJneqSU . After the movie I will ask the class if they have any questions that they might want to ask. Following that I will let them know what they will learn more about during the next class which will be continents.

6. Assessment

  • As I conduct my demonstration I will do an assessment to see who is answering and asking questions. Also for the Guided Practice I will see which groups understand it by the speed they get it down and how correctly they get it done.

  • For the independent Practice I will be grading  there paper by giving them 5 points for each question one they get correctly. There will be 10  selections. So that means they have the option of making 50 points, they must make 35 points to have mastered the lesson

7. Describe accommodations /modifications

I will pair the students with special needs with other students I know that can help them. I will also help assist when needed to. I will allow them to have a extra 5-10mins on the christopher Columbus handout that will be given during the Demonstration. This will also go for the Independent Practice which will allow them to be given extra time and for me to help them guide through so I know they understand it.

8. Instructional or behavioral problems

I do not feel that the class will have any problems with the procedures for the day. The procedures given today will be hands on so it will keep them focused. The video provided will also help them see in depth what Columbus did in a fun way. If we have any disruptions then they will be reminded of the behavior rules.
