EDUC 2110-Lesson 8:
Single Sex Classrooms
Overview Viewpoint:
Lesson eight of Education 2110 focuses on single sex class rooms. This would mean that there would be all girls or all boys classrooms. We had to watch three seperate videos that were found in our D2L (DESIRE2LEARN) and they focused on single sex classrooms. Which followed to answering one of the questions in the lesson. We also had to look at three different articles about the pros and cons of single sex classroom. This lesson shows you that this is one of the many ways that schools try to teach their students better. With many schools, single sex classroom work for them.

Question #1
List and describe 2-3 possible advantages of single sex classrooms.
One advantage would that it helps with girl’s self-esteem. Usually girls are worried about how they look to guys and if they could get their attention. Well if the boys aren’t around then the girls wouldn’t have to worry about that and it causes less distraction and they won’t have to have a guy’s opinion on anything. Another advantage would be female empowerment. Most people think guys are supposed to have more power in things like work or school clubs. Having it being just girl’s causes the girls to know that they could run this organization or they can be the boss of this. The girls get into competition easily.

Question #2
List and describe 2-3 potential disadvantages of single sex classrooms.
One disadvantage for boys and girls is that it creates a gender stereotype. If girls can spend time around boys or vice versa it makes them make assumptions about each other and sometimes negative stereotypes are created. It also is said that single sex classrooms can make it hard to receive vital social skills. Another disadvantage is some say that girls and boys learn differently. If girls and guys learned together they can learn from one another and learn more learning styles.

Question #3
After watching the videos and reading the articles, describe your stance on the single sex classroom issue. Provide some reasons why you agree or disagree with the concept. Also, you might want to answer these questions: Would you want to be educated in single-sex classrooms? Why or why not? Would you want your children educated in single-sex classrooms? Why or why not?
I have personally went to a school that was single-sex classrooms. I went to middle school where there would be just classes filled with boys and just class’s filled girls. There wasn’t a mixed class at all. Would I want to be education in a single-sex classroom? Yes, I wouldn’t mind. To me they do cause less of a distraction because males can be distracting. But there are times where I would not want to be in the single-sex classroom. When I was in one at the middle school I went to there would be a lot of drama or issues in the girl’s classrooms. I mostly think it was like that because girls go through a lot of emotions and when there is a full class of girls that might be emotional then it gets kind of crazy in there. I personally wouldn’t want my child to be in a single-sex classroom. I want my child to be in a more diverse environment and I feel like this would prevent them from receiving that.
-
Question #4
Are single-sex classrooms a form of discrimination? Explain.
I have mixed feelings on if this would be a form of discrimination. Single-sex classrooms do have some tendencies tho that i feel are a form but they also show that its not. With guys or girls not being able to learn about each this creates them to create assumptions towards each other causing discrimination. It creates stereotypes about the genders. Single-sex classrooms purposely keep students of different gender from learning together.

Summary
Single-sex classrooms are starting to grow across the nation. Many oppose and some like it. It really does has its pros and cons. I have personally been in a single-sex classroom and it has its days where it was useful and days that it wasn’t. Single-sex classrooms do help with distractions and creates women empowerment and I like that. I personally fill like this shouldn’t be something to focus on when choosing a school, there is more worries. When choosing a school for a child it should be more on the education that the child would get.

Research Question
What can single-sex classrooms do for a student in the future?
-
Research Analysis
It is said that single sex classrooms for guys it helps them with their sports and activities. The guys start to connect a lot better and they personally get to know each other a lot easier. This causes for better communication in there sports and they learn better techniques from one another easily. This helps them improve. For girls they say that single-sex classrooms makes them more aware of women empowerment. This encourages them to want to lead people. It makes them goal for higher things because they know it’s possible.
There are others who think that single-sex classrooms teaches nothing. They say it actually harms them for the future. Some say that single-sex classrooms create stereotypes. This causes boys and girls to have assumptions against the opposite sex which might not be true. This can lead to problems later on when meeting new people outside school.

Research Summary
Single-sex can help with the future of students. It can prepare them to goal higher. It helps them connect better with people that are like them. I personally can understand why some might not single-sex classes. It’s hard to learn different personalities. It also makes it hard to know how to communicate to the opposite sex because the ones in single-sex classrooms don’t have much interactions with the opposite sex.
