EDUC 2130-Lesson 8:
Behavioral learning
Overview Viewpoint:
Lesson eight of EDUC 2130 focuses on deviant behaviors in the classroom. For this lesson we got to choose a video from Dr.Mac, I chose a podcast on non compliance and strategies on handling misehaving studedents. This podcast was an i opener for me because i learned many tips that i could use for the classroom becuase all teachers will face a student who is misbehave. After choosing a podcast we had to watch the video and then answer the following questions below.
-
What was the title of the resource (Podcast or video) you decided to review?
Understanding & Motivating Unmotivated Learners
-
Provide a two paragraph overview of the information contained in the Podcast/video.
In podcast 1, in the beginning they talk about how to handle situations and to prevent the deviant behavior. For the first 5 minutes he starts with wanting the "watcher" of the video to get a partner so he can use this as an example. He starts with the fist. The watcher must pry open the partners fist. Of course the partner will resist and they struggle back and forth. Sometimes the partner gives in and he states that these are the ones we don’t need to use physical force with. This example was to show that you don’t have to use physical force to demand compliance.
However, that only works with some children. The deviant ones are different. If a teacher yells for the student to behavior its not going to work. That is where the 80-15-5 rule comes in and it means only about 80% it will be effective, and maybe 15% it somewhat maybe effective, and then we have 5% it doesn’t work with children which are the ones we call deviant. He states using the "fist" example that the way to get control is to ask. When asking them you should include the students name, a description of the action that is desired, and of course ended it with a please.
-
Why did you choose this Podcast/video?
I Choose this podcast because I've always looking for ways to handle deviant children or the children that misbehavior from time to time. There are many ways to candle children but often it’s the wrong way and it can boost the child to want to misbehave more. I think its important for teachers to learn technics turn handle situations like he did using the fist example. Misbehaving children is something that all teachers will face because its absolutely normal.
-
Concerning the information in the Podcast/video - Was anything surprising to you?
One thing that was surprising to me is when he talked about in this podcast was distracting the behavior of a child. Like shaking hands or having them catch something. It’s a way of getting a child to engage in appropriate behavior. I never thought about distracting a child's behavior but it does make sense to do that. For example when I might be doing something they are not suppose to be doing you can tell them to catch a pencil or something and it will make them forget what they was actually doing because catching the pencil was a surprise to them.
-
In your opinion, describe two of three of the most important things you learned from listening to the Podcast/video.
The first thing I would have to say is that yelling is not the answer. Many times teacher yells "be quiet" or "stop talking" but students don’t like that which makes them want to challenge the teacher. When deviant children see they are making their teacher upset they feel like the won the situation. That why its good to take control. The second thing was doing things with respect. If you talk to a student calmly they will have a higher chance of following what you need. When you want them to do something you have to describe the action you want done.
-
How could you use the podcast information in YOUR classroom?
I always was taught the treat people how you would be treated and that will be a requirement in my class. When you talk to students calmly the react in a better way in my opinion. When teachers yell at there students and show that they are upset student react in a bad manner so that is not how my class will be. I will have conversations with my students in private if they are misbehaving because If I do it in front of the class the student might feel embarrassed and they will continue to act out.

Summary
Overall this lesson was very interesting. Dr. Mac who was they one who explained the lesson was very informational. They examples that he used created a good understanding. He also made it hands on so people could understand it better. This was very helping and I do plan on using the tips in my classroom. There was some new things that I learned from it and there was some things that ive already knew from previous lessons that we have done.

Research Question
How are some ways that teachers can keep positive vibes in the classroom?
-
Research Analysis
Classroom behavior is one of the trickiest issues teachers face today. Disruptive behavior results in lost curriculum time and creates a classroom environment that is not always conducive to learning. One key to nipping behavioral problems in the bud is to promote positive behavior before problems arise. Make sure that students know what you expect of them. The classroom rules you present should be positive, specific and concise. You may wish to post them in the classroom or distribute them for students to sign. You should also spell out what will happen if students do not meet expectations.
When you praise students who are excelling, don't forget to encourage those who are trying, but struggling. These students often lack confidence and need more positive reinforcement. Busy students are far less likely to exhibit disruptive behavior. Be sure that students are working at appropriate levels; boredom and frustration often lead to students' acting out. Creating an environment in which students know and follow the rules is challenging, but not impossible. With a little patience and perseverance, you can lay a foundation for respect and positive behavior in your classroom that lasts all year.

Research Summary
Creating positive environments will help with students to be positive themselves. When students are in negative environments they tend to not want to be there. They will have bad attitudes and make it aware that they don’t want to be there. You have to let the students know that they have a reason for being there. Complementing them and telling them they are doing a good job makes them feel good and positive about themselves but of course you should only do it when only when they do good. If a teacher overall do it then the student will start to look for praise when is a little bad because if they don’t get that praise they might start to feel down and think they aren't as good as others.
