EDUC 2130-Lesson 6:

Learning Needs

Overview Viewpoint:

Lesson six of EDUC 2130 focuses on ourselves. Its a lesson about the things we can approve and what we can do to get better. This lesson allows you to  think about the importance of being aware of your learning flaws. This allows you to also look out what you are good at and what about you that you like about yourself. Being a teacher you have to be positive so you have to be able to recognize your negatives to be able to control them in the classrooms and not show them.

  • Think of something you are good at – something which you know you do well. (This may be an academic subject, but equally could be a hobby or skill – in short, anything at all that you're good at). Describe how you became good at this.

I think mines would be something based academically. I find myself to be very good in English classes. I think its mostly because I like to write. When I was younger I would write all the time even though have of what I wrote was misspelled and didn’t make sense but I did. I still have tons of work from when I was younger that consisted of poems and other things. I think I got good at it because I did it so much it was kind of like studying. When you do something a lot or something that you enjoy you start to get better and better at it each time. Once I started getting old and graded on it I can tell that I started to make better grades on my essays. That is also for my English class in general. For CRCT testing and for the Graduation test English was the subject I score more in out of the rest of the subjects. I became good at this subject from doing it over and over again and the subject is something that you use every day.

  • Think of something you feel positive about – something which you like about yourself. This could be anything about yourself which tends to make you proud. Discuss how you know that you can be proud of this – in other words, upon what evidence is this positive feeling based?

I like to help people. When I say help people I mean to give them advice, financially, or support. A lot of times I try to look out for my friends like help them find jobs or give them rides to the interviews and work. If they need something I want to help. Even if I do not know them. I like to help out outreach centers and help children do their homework. It’s a good feeling because children sometimes just need someone there for them because you never know what they are going through at home. I also like to donate my things that I don’t need or want because yes, I do have the option to sell it but why not give it someone who needs it.

  •

Think of something which you don't do well! This could be the result of an unsuccessful learning experience, maybe long ago or maybe recently. Discuss each of the following: what went wrong, do you think, in your learning relating to this thing you do not do well? And who, if anyone, might have been to blame for this?

I think one thing I don’t do is express how I feel which can get me into trouble sometimes whether it’s at work, school, or home. I tend to go with the flow of things when im with friends and stuff and sometimes it can result in not being the best choice. I have never quite figured out why I am like that yet. I think in the experiences that I learned from it is that I need to speak up more. I have always did this for as long as I can remember. I do however think as I grew growing up and making big girl decisions I have gotten out of that habit just a little bit more but there is always room for improvement.

  •

Think of something you can indeed do well, but that you didn't want to learn at the time you learned it. This could be something like 'driving', 'swimming',' cooking' or, equally, it could relate to a particular area of academic study – perhaps 'statistics' or 'economics' and so on. Whatever it is, you're probably pleased now that you succeeded with it – it's likely to be useful to you now. Discuss what kept you going, so that you did indeed succeed in this particular episode of learning.

I think cooking would be something I can indeed do well. For the longest my parents would try to show me how to cook so many things but I would try to find excuses just to get out of it. My mom would always say that when I move out that I am going to starve myself. However, that was false! I slowly began baking secretly. Making cakes and brownies anything my taste buds desired and I kept getting complements. I think I ended up trying different foods out just to see if I could do it and overall I think I do well now. At first I was always scared to cook because I would put popcorn in the microwave and burn it or burn myself making pizza so I always felt like cooking wasn’t for me but it has turned out alright so far.

    Summary

This lesson made me think of many things that I had feared once upon a time. I guess this lesson can let you see how sometimes it is good to face your fears because you never know if your good at something unless you try it. I think I could have named a lot of thing for each topic but I didn’t want to get carried away and off topic. This lesson helps you think of the positives that you have about yourself even if sometimes you may think negative about yourself so this was a positive lesson and it has taught me that I still have room for improvement in some areas.

  • Research Question

Why as a teacher is it good to be a positive person?

  • Research Analysis

Research shows that emotions are contagious. Sincere smiles, kind words, encouragement and positive energy infect people in a positive way from teachers. Little eyes are watching and little ears are listening. When it comes to being a role model, you must be aware that the choices you make don’t only impact you but also the children who regard you as their superhero. Someday, they will be in the same predicament and think to themselves, “What did s/he do when s/he was in the same situation?” When you are a role model it’s not enough to tell your charges the best choices to make. You must put them into action yourself.

Being a positive person, is not an easy task. Being a positive teacher is even harder when we’re always met with problems with very limited solutions. However, staying positive when it’s tough can have such a tremendous positive impact on the students and everyone around us. Looking on the bright side always seems to help make things better.

  • Research Summary

It’s important for teachers to always be positive people because there are children who look up to you. They expect to be in a good environment so they wouldn’t want to hear negative things or be in a presence of a teacher that is having a bad day. Being negative could also make the students pick up some of the habits so it’s always good to remain positive and leave personal things outside of the school and away from the children.
